Background:
The Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup initiative has grown from a District 7090 service project covering a small portion of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie to a multi-district plan to focus Rotarians’ attention on all five of the Great Lakes and their streams and waterways feeding them. The goal every year is to make this the single largest cleanup event ever planned.
The Great Lakes contain almost 20% of the world's fresh water and are arguably the largest source of fresh water on the planet. It borders eight states and two provinces and has 9,577 miles (15,323 kilometers) of shoreline. More than 22 million pounds (10 million kilograms) of trash and plastic pollution ends up in the Great Lakes each year.
This cleanup is critical to reducing the amount of garbage that collects in our watersheds each year. The second goal is to tabulate the amount of debris collected from each of the individual cleanup events. The most important goal is to educate the public on the importance of protecting our waterways and to instill a sense of stewardship towards our Great Lakes.
Opportunity:
Engage as many Districts, Clubs, Rotarians, Rotaractors, and other community groups and volunteers around the Great Lakes Watershed. Each Club should find out what is happening in their community regarding other spring clean-ups. Engage with local Conservation Authorities, Watershed Groups, and local non-governmental organizations to see what is already planned in your area and to coordinate or partner with them.
Let's make a difference in our environment and come together as a community to clean up our Great Lakes! |

Tanya McCready is not just an entrepreneur and a captivating speaker, but also an individual who embodies the values of perseverance, dedication, and teamwork, which have shaped her extraordinary life journey. Nearly 30 years ago, Tanya and her husband, Hank DeBruin, pivoted from traditional careers to pursue a passion sparked by a husky puppy they adopted. They established Winterdance, a renowned dogsledding company in Haliburton, Ontario. The success of their venture, which now welcomes over 2000 guests each winter, is a testament to their determination and the power of following one's dreams. These principles, although learnt in a wilderness setting, have powerful applications in corporate and community settings alike. Tanya's engaging storytelling style, combined with her exceptional journey, makes her an inspiring speaker that resonates with a diverse audience. Her previous engagement with our club left members mesmerized, reflecting on the powerful parallels between their own leadership experiences and Tanya's unique narrative.
